Richmond County Criminal History Checks
No single search supplies a complete Richmond County criminal history. Begin with the record closest to the event. The RCSO Inmate Inquiry is useful for a recent custodial arrest. It is a booking search, not a finding of guilt. A filed felony or misdemeanor belongs with the Clerk of Superior, State and Juvenile Court. A Georgia-wide history comes from a GCIC-authorized channel, while a sentenced state offender may appear in the GDC search.
Prepare a full name, date of birth, spelling variants, incident date, arresting agency, and case or booking number when known. Common names require care. Match several identifiers and never assume a result belongs to the right person from a name alone.
- Search RCSO for a current or recent county booking.
- Note the booking number, arresting agency, charge wording, and bond without treating them as a verdict.
- Call the clerk at 706-821-2460, using option 3 for a felony or option 4 for a misdemeanor.
- Read the filed accusation or indictment and the disposition, because charges can change after intake.
- Request a certified court copy or inspect an official GCIC history when that level of proof is needed.
Online results are leads. A person released from jail may no longer appear in a current roster, an online court index may omit document images, and a restricted result may be hidden from ordinary dissemination. If a search comes back blank, change one variable at a time. Check the spelling, search all custody statuses where offered, confirm the county and arresting agency, then contact the custodian. A certified copy must come from the office that maintains the original.
Richmond Criminal Record Routing
Augusta's official Open Records page separates requests by custodian. That distinction saves time: arrest and crash reports go to RCSO, filed cases go to the clerk, and the general Open Records Officer handles other consolidated-government departments.
The routing page confirms that one broad request cannot replace targeted searches. Ask the creator for the police narrative, the jail for booking data, and the court for the judgment.
| Question | First channel | What to request |
|---|---|---|
| Was someone booked recently? | RCSO Inmate Inquiry | Booking entry and custody status |
| What did the officer report? | Arresting agency | Incident or arrest narrative |
| What charge was filed? | Richmond clerk | Accusation, indictment, and docket |
| How did the case end? | Richmond clerk | Disposition, judgment, and sentence |
| Is there a Georgia history? | GCIC-authorized channel | Permitted statewide criminal history |
Official Background Checks in Georgia
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Georgia Crime Information Center keeps the central criminal-history repository. For self-review, follow the GCIC criminal-history FAQ. Most sheriffs or police departments can provide a Georgia history under their own identification, consent, and fee rules. GCIC also offers appointment-only personal record inspection in Decatur. Errors should be challenged through GCIC and the agency or court that supplied the entry.
The FAQ makes the product boundaries clear. Georgia Felon Search is a public name-based search limited to qualifying felony-conviction records. It does not replace a complete fingerprint-supported history or a Richmond court file.
Georgia Felon Search requires a full name, race, sex, and date of birth under the public-access provision. A local agency history can follow different consent and release rules. For a national self-review, the FBI Electronic Departmental Order process accepts a subject-only Identity History Summary request with fingerprints. It reports records supplied to the FBI, not every report or court paper held in Richmond County.
Georgia Fingerprint Record Checks
The Georgia Applicant Processing Service, or GAPS, is the state's electronic civil-fingerprint channel. An authorized agency registers a permitted transaction, the person attends a fixed capture site, and the result normally returns to that agency within 24 to 48 hours. GAPS is not an open public search for another person's record.
Fingerprint matching helps distinguish people with similar names. It still does not supply every local police narrative, motion, or docket image. Those remain with the agency or court that made them.
| Service | Known cost | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Georgia Felon Search | Confirm at checkout | Portal transaction fee |
| Local Georgia history | Confirm with agency | Official Richmond fee not located |
| GAPS fingerprints | Varies | Depends on service code and site |
| FBI Identity History Summary | $18 | Subject-only request plus fingerprints |
| Copies and extensive searches | Estimate may apply | Georgia law permits certain copy and labor costs |
Kinds of Richmond Criminal Records
An arrest can create several records at once. The officer's agency writes an incident or arrest report. If the person enters county custody, RCSO creates a booking profile and fingerprint transaction. A prosecutor later chooses the charge to file, and the clerk keeps the docket. GCIC associates Georgia arrest cycles with dispositions reported by courts and agencies.
Custody and supervision split again. RCSO covers county detention, GDC covers sentenced state offenders, DCS supervises adult felony probation and parole, and the State Board of Pardons and Paroles makes parole decisions. GBI publishes the Georgia Sex Offender Registry from data verified by county sheriffs.
- Arrest and booking records describe the alleged event and jail intake.
- Criminal court files show filed charges, hearings, pleas, and outcomes.
- GCIC histories link fingerprint-associated Georgia cycles to reported dispositions.
- Warrant records come from courts and law enforcement, but sealed or unexecuted process may be unavailable.
- Custody, supervision, and registry records answer narrower status questions through separate agencies.
Richmond Court Records at Suite 1500
The Clerk of Superior, State and Juvenile Court is the key source for a filed charge and final Richmond County outcome. The office is in Suite 1500 of the Augusta-Richmond County Judicial Center, 735 James Brown Boulevard, Augusta, GA 30901. Call 706-821-2460. The menu sends felony questions to option 3 and misdemeanor or misdemeanor-citation questions to option 4.
The clerk's official contact directory displays that division-specific route.
Superior Court hears felonies. State Court handles misdemeanors, DUI, and traffic matters. Magistrate Court covers warrants, first appearances, and preliminary hearings. Printed public documents are available through the clerk when online images are gated, while protected juvenile files are not ordinary public adult records.
The Georgia Judicial Council's e-access directory lists Richmond Superior Court through an account-required provider. Treat any index as a finding aid. Ask for the accusation or indictment, docket, plea or verdict, and sentence when a full outcome is needed. “Open” only describes case status. “Disposed” means the court completed the matter or event, but the actual charge-level result still must be read.
Richmond County Criminal Records: What They Contain
The fields depend on the source. A booking profile may show intake identifiers, an image, arresting agency, initial charges, bond, and custody or release data. A court file adds a case number, charging instrument, docket events, pleas, judgment, sentence, and financial entries. A GCIC history contains identification data and fingerprint-linked arrest cycles with reported dispositions and Georgia correctional custody. Public versions redact protected data.
| Name & Identifiers | Name, birth date or age, physical traits, and agency identifiers, with sensitive data withheld publicly. |
|---|---|
| Arrest / Booking Data | Agency, date, booking number, intake charge, bond, facility, and release information. |
| Charges & Statutes | Initial allegations or later filed counts, legal code, and felony or misdemeanor severity. |
| Disposition | Dismissal, nolle prosequi, plea, acquittal, conviction, no-bill, or another charge-level outcome. |
| Sentence | Custody, probation, fines, restitution, or other terms imposed by the court. |
| Custody / Supervision Status | County jail, state prison, release, probation, or parole information held by the proper agency. |
Three Richmond Record Stories
A booking, court file, and GCIC history answer different questions. RCSO proves that jail intake occurred. The clerk's file shows what prosecutors filed and how each count ended. GCIC connects fingerprint-supported cycles across Georgia to dispositions that agencies reported. A lag or error in that reporting chain can leave a disposition missing.
- Booking charge
- The probable-cause label used at intake. It may later change.
- Accusation or indictment
- The formal charge filed by a prosecutor or returned by a grand jury.
- Disposition
- The outcome for a case or individual charge.
- Dead docket
- A case put off indefinitely by court order, not a conviction.
- Nolle prosequi
- A prosecutor's decision not to continue that charge.
- First Offender
- An eligible Georgia disposition that avoids adjudication after successful completion.
If GCIC lacks a Richmond disposition, obtain the court result and ask the relevant court to transmit the correction electronically. Recheck the history afterward.
Georgia Public Access Laws
The Georgia Open Records Act makes agency records presumptively open unless an exemption applies. An agency generally responds within three business days, but that response may acknowledge the request, clarify scope, cite an exemption, or provide a time and cost estimate. It does not promise full delivery within three days. Protected victim, juvenile, medical, financial, and security-sensitive data can be withheld or redacted.
Key Statutes:
O.C.G.A. §§ 50-18-70 through 77 - establishes public access and the agency response framework.
O.C.G.A. § 35-3-34 - controls GCIC dissemination and public felony-conviction access.
O.C.G.A. § 35-3-37 - governs eligible Georgia record restriction.
O.C.G.A. § 42-1-12 - sets sex-offender registration and public information duties.
O.C.G.A. §§ 42-8-60 through 63.1 - supplies Georgia's First Offender framework and sealing rules.
Richmond Custody After County Jail
County and state custody are separate. RCSO manages Richmond County jail intake and local detention. A person transferred after a state sentence may appear in GDC Find an Offender. The official search guidance suggests trying the first four letters of the last name and selecting all offenders, not only active records.
GDC results can include an EF or state identification number, crime, facility, and tentative parole month. Successfully completed First Offender cases are not published. VINELink provides custody notifications, while the clerk remains the source for the judgment. Federal custody is separate again and uses the BOP locator.
Probation and parole also have their own custodians. The court judgment shows whether probation was imposed. Georgia's Department of Community Supervision manages adult felony probation and parole supervision, while the State Board of Pardons and Paroles decides parole. Its status line is 404-656-4661. The current Augusta field office at 3439 Mike Padgett Highway serves Burke and Richmond Counties. Detailed supervision notes are not a general public database.
Restricted, Sealed & Expunged Records
Georgia uses the term record restriction. Restriction removes an eligible arrest cycle from ordinary public and private GCIC dissemination, but it does not destroy the underlying record. Criminal-justice agencies and judicial officers may retain access for authorized purposes. Court-record sealing is a separate step, so a restricted GCIC entry may still require a court order to shield the clerk's public file.
For an arrest before July 1, 2013, the applicant starts the GBI restriction application with the arresting agency. The agency and prosecutor complete later sections before the package reaches GCIC. For arrests on or after that date, GBI directs the person to the prosecutor for an eligible restriction rather than using the old application route.
Dismissed, no-billed, dead-docketed, or nolle-prossed matters may qualify under the applicable rules. A conviction usually needs a different statutory route. Juvenile information and protected personal data also have independent access limits.
Richmond Second Chance Desk
Richmond County offers a local route for help with restriction and sealing. The Augusta Judicial Circuit Second Chance Desk is a partnership of the Georgia Justice Project, the circuit district attorney, and the Richmond Solicitor. It assists with eligible Burke and Richmond arrests and cases at no charge.
The desk meets at Augusta Public Library Headquarters, 823 Telfair Street, on the first Wednesday of each month from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Preregistration is required, and walk-ins depend on capacity. Bring or obtain a current history first. Missing dispositions should be fixed with the court before relying on a restriction result.
City-by-City Criminal Records in Richmond County
Augusta-Richmond County's consolidated government makes RCSO the main local police-record and booking hub for Augusta. Hephzibah and Blythe remain incorporated, yet neither had a verified separate public booking or court database in the official-source review. For those cities, identify the arresting agency and issuing court, then use RCSO and the Richmond clerk when the event belongs in Richmond County. Blythe's place near the Burke line makes county verification especially important.

Applications for qualifying Richmond criminal and traffic cases
There is no verified comprehensive public Richmond warrant database. A case-linked bench warrant may be checked with the Superior or State clerk; Magistrate Court handles arrest warrants and preliminary matters; RCSO can address execution or status. Learn the issuing court and obtain safe resolution instructions before acting.
For an RCSO report request, give the incident or arrest number when available, the date range, location, involved person's name, arresting agency, exact document, and desired delivery method. Georgia law permits inspection and copying, and an office may seek clarification or estimate lawful costs for a broad request. RCSO did not publish a stable complete fee sheet in the reviewed official sources, so confirm charges before ordering. Body-camera video, 911 audio, and investigative material may require a focused request and redaction review.
